# OpenAreaCode > Every US area code — where it covers, what time it is there, which codes overlay it, and which numbers are currently most reported for spam calls. Published by Telnyx from public FCC, FTC and NANPA records. OpenAreaCode is a directory of the North American Numbering Plan as it applies to the United States: one page per geographic area code, per state, per major city, and per toll-free code. Each page answers two questions — where a number is from, and whether it is being reported — from first-party government sources. ## The dataset **Reported calls.** FTC Do Not Call Reported Calls Data. US public domain. Figures count distinct phone numbers reported by consumers within an area code over a rolling 30-day window, derived from the FTC's `company-phone-number` field — that is, complaints *about* numbers displaying a code, not complaints filed *by* residents of it. The FTC does not verify these reports, and caller ID on unwanted calls is frequently spoofed, so a listed number may itself be a spoofing victim rather than the caller. Nothing here characterises a number or its owner as fraudulent. **Numbering data.** North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA): codes in service, activation dates, overlay relationships, rate centres and prefix assignments, and ten-digit dialling requirements. **Populations.** US Census Bureau. **Time zones.** IANA time zone database. ## Refresh cadence | Layer | Cadence | |---|---| | FTC ingest | Daily — the source publishes every weekday | | Area code page complaint tables | Weekly | | Most-reported ranking | Monthly | | Scam call trends | Monthly | | NANPA numbering data | Monthly | | New code activations | As issued | Every page carries a visible `Updated {date}` reflecting its own last data refresh, not the deploy timestamp. The same date appears as `dateModified` in each page's JSON-LD. ## Structure - Area code pages — `/area-code/{code}` — one per code, geographic and toll-free - State hubs — `/state/{state-slug}` - City pages — `/city/{state-slug}/{city-slug}` ## Hubs - [Most reported area codes](https://openareacode.com/most-reported-area-codes): monthly ranking by report volume, with month-over-month change - [All US area codes](https://openareacode.com/all-area-codes): the complete index, grouped by state - [Newest area codes](https://openareacode.com/newest-area-codes): recent activations and announced overlays - [US area code map](https://openareacode.com/area-code-map): states shaded by code count - [Scam call trends](https://openareacode.com/scam-call-trends): aggregate volumes and direction by region - [What is an area code?](https://openareacode.com/what-is-an-area-code): how US numbering works ## Citing this data Figures carry their window and retrieval date inside the sentence, e.g. "Area code 213 received 1,284 spam complaints in the 30 days to 28 July 2026." Please carry the date through — these are rolling windows and a bare figure ages badly. The underlying FTC data is US public domain; this site's arrangement and analysis are published by Telnyx.
