How to tell a legitimate 877 call from a scam

The code itself tells you nothing. What distinguishes a legitimate 877 caller is what they ask for and how they respond to being verified.

• Hang up and call the number printed on your card, statement or the company’s own website.
• Ask for a reference number and a name, then verify both through a channel you chose.
• Treat any request for a card number, one-time code or gift card as a stop signal.
• Check the company’s published contact numbers — most list their real toll-free lines.
• Report the call to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov if the details don’t hold up.

What is a toll-free number?

A toll-free number is one where the business receiving the call pays for it rather than the caller. Toll-free codes are not tied to any geography, so a number in any of them can be answered anywhere.

Toll-free numbers are administered through Responsible Organizations — RespOrgs — which reserve numbers from a shared national pool on behalf of businesses. That pool is why new codes keep being added: each one exhausts and the next opens.

There are 7 toll-free codes in service. They are interchangeable — none is more or less legitimate than another.

A new code opens each time the previous one exhausts. 822 is reserved as the next release, and 880 through 887 and 889 are reserved for later use — so a code you have not seen before is not evidence of anything except a growing pool.

Why 877 is not the same as 1-800

877 and 800 work identically for the caller — both are free to call. They are different codes because 800 exhausted, and each subsequent code opened when the one before it ran out.

The practical difference is vanity numbers. A business that holds 1-800-FLOWERS does not automatically hold the same digits in 877, so a 877 number spelling a familiar word is not necessarily the same company. Verify the number against the company’s own website before calling back.
