What is an area code?
An area code is the first three digits of a ten-digit North American phone number, identifying the region the number was issued in.
The North American Numbering Plan assigned the first 86 in 1947. There are 331 geographic area codes serving the United States today, plus non-geographic ones like the 7 toll-free codes, which carry no location at all. Number portability means a code tells you where a number was issued, not where its owner is now.
